The Cleveland Cavaliers' Historic 2016 Championship

The Cleveland Cavaliers made National Basketball Association (NBA) history in 2016 by becoming the first team to come back from a 3-1 series deficit during the NBA Finals. The team also made franchise history, improving on the 2007 and 2015 Cavalier’s NBA Finals appearances and winning Cleveland’s first championship.

Led by LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love, the 2015-2016 Cleveland Cavaliers won 57 regular-season games, the third-best record in franchise history. Cleveland progressed easily through the opening rounds of the 2016 NBA Playoffs, sweeping the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks and winning the first two games of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Toronto Raptors. The Cavaliers ultimately defeated the Raptors in six games to advance to the NBA Finals, a rematch of the previous year’s championship series between Cleveland and the Golden State Warriors.

The Warriors dominated the Cavaliers to start the series, winning the first two games at home by scores of 104-89 and 110-77. After a 30-point victory in Cleveland, the Cavaliers dropped a close Game 3, 108-97, to fall behind 3-1 in the series, a hole no team had previously recovered from. However, James and Irving both put up 41 points in Game 5 to keep the Cavaliers in the series, and a return to Cleveland resulted in a 115-101 victory, knotting the series at three games apiece.

The decisive Game 7 at Golden State proved the closest game of the series. Cleveland held a one-point lead after the first quarter but carried a seven-point deficit into halftime. The Warriors maintained a narrow one-point lead entering the final quarter, but Cleveland tied the game with just over four minutes remaining. Both teams committed to defense and the game remained tied at 89 until Irving connected on a memorable three-pointer with less than a minute left on the clock. Shortly after, Love locked Stephen Curry down on the perimeter, forcing a miss, and Cleveland held on for the victory, sealing the historic comeback.

How to Perfect Your Basketball Shot

Picture
A good basketball shot starts with a consistent shooting technique. By keeping feet shoulder-width apart, aligning their torso, and orienting the shooting foot slightly forward, players get from the body to stay straight to keep balance as the knees softly bend. This steady basis helps to lower strain and increase accuracy over time by enabling shooters to create power effectively.

Proper hand placement significantly enhances shot control. The shooting hand rests under the ball, fingers spread evenly, while the guide hand supports the side without interfering. Many players succeed by ensuring the elbow stays aligned with the body, pointing toward the basket. This setup promotes a smooth release and minimizes errant shots caused by misalignment.

Follow-through proves critical for shot accuracy. After releasing the ball, the shooting hand extends fully, with the wrist flicking downward as if reaching into a cookie jar. The fingers point toward the target, and the arm remains extended briefly. This motion ensures the ball travels with the intended arc and spin, increasing the likelihood of a successful shot.

Regular practice with targeted drills sharpens shooting precision. Drills like form shooting, where players take close-range shots while focusing on mechanics, reinforce muscle memory. Another effective method involves shooting from various spots on the court, simulating game scenarios. Such exercises build confidence and adaptability, enabling players to perform under pressure.

Mental focus complements physical technique in perfecting a shot. Visualizing the ball’s trajectory before shooting helps players maintain concentration. Staying relaxed and avoiding overthinking during the shot process also contributes to consistency. A calm mind allows the body to execute practiced movements naturally.

Perfecting a basketball shot reflects a player’s ability to adapt and grow. Every missed shot offers a lesson, revealing subtle flaws in form or focus.

The Toronto Argonauts Football Club named its coaching staff for the 2025 CFL season. Head Coach Ryan Dinwiddie’s staff featured two new additions: Jason Shivers as Co-Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Backs Coach, and Pro Player Personnel Assistant; and Greg Marshall as Defensive Line Coach.

Greg Marshall, who leads the defensive line, has coached since 1990. He arrived in Toronto after spending time in Ottawa, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Saskatchewan, and Edmonton during his tenure in the Canadian Football League. Marshall joined the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1994 as a defensive line coach and later advanced to defensive coordinator and assistant head coach from 1996 to 1999.

Earlier in his career, Marshall coached a semi-professional football team and a juvenile team in Ottawa in the early 1990s. From 2000 to 2010, he held various roles, including defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, linebackers coach, and assistant head coach, in Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Hamilton, before becoming Saskatchewan’s head coach in 2011.

In 2013, the Massachusetts native worked as Edmonton’s defensive coordinator. Marshall moved to USPORTS, coaching the defense at Queen’s University from 2014 to 2017, before serving as head coach at the University of Toronto from 2018 to 2023. He coached the defensive line again in 2024.

Jason Shivers, now Co-Defensive Coordinator, Defensive Backs Coach, and Pro Player Personnel Assistant, returns to the city where his CFL coaching and playing careers began in 2007 and 2013. In 2013, the Arizona native worked as a defensive assistant for the Argos.

Shivers coached defensive backs for the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2014 to 2018, winning a Grey Cup with Edmonton in 2015. In 2019, Shivers became the defensive coordinator of the Roughriders, a role he kept until 2024, when he moved to Edmonton to serve as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator.

How to Improve Your Basketball Skills

One practical approach to improving basketball skills is enhancing ball-handling. Players who can dribble with both hands have better control during games. Keeping the ball close to the floor helps with quick movements while practicing moves builds confidence. Many find that repeating these actions daily strengthens their coordination and makes handling pressure easier.

Shooting accuracy is another way for players to elevate their game. The correct stance and a smooth release contribute to consistent results. Research suggests that shooters who focus on specific spots improve their scoring over time. Taking fewer shots with full attention to form often beats firing off countless rushed shots. Some players use video to check and correct their posture.

Defense is a vital skill that separates good players from great ones. Staying low and sliding side to side keeps opponents in check. Watching how pros position their bodies to disrupt plays can help. Players who put effort into drills, such as shadowing a teammate or blocking shots, see their speed and instincts grow, turning them into formidable challenges on the court.

Passing also deserves attention. Delivering the ball cleanly to a teammate relies on reading the flow of play. Simple exercises, such as tossing the ball against a wall or pairing up for quick exchanges, sharpen accuracy. Players who mix in different passes, such as a bounce or a fast chest throw, help their team move more smoothly.

Basketball growth sneaks up on those who stick with it, revealing itself unexpectedly. Players might notice they are calmer under pressure or quicker to spot an open teammate, signs of progress that go beyond stats. Skills deepen when players approach each session with an open mind, ready to pick up something fresh.

The Impact on Jurors Serving in Capital Cases

The cost of the death penalty extends beyond financial expenses. For some, it reaches their emotional and psychological well-being, including the jurors. A report in the Death Penalty Information Center highlighted the trauma experienced by the jurors in the Summit County, Ohio, death penalty trial of Eric Hendon.

Several jurors reported experiencing severe emotional and psychological distress. One juror struggled with sleep disturbances for weeks after the trial. Another was fraught with clear and gruesome visions of the crime scene. Yet another juror developed paranoia.

Some jurors hesitated to conduct media interviews since they feared it would result in harassment from the public. Juror harassment has become more common in cases involving minority defendants or white defendants tried for crimes against minorities. Therefore, the Hendon case illustrates another instance of the emotional distress these cases can bring upon jurors if they find them guilty, regardless of the punishment brought on the guilty.

Picture
Since its inception in 1873, the Toronto Argonauts Football Club has left a lasting mark on Canadian sports history. Established under the umbrella of the Argonaut Rowing Club, the Toronto Argonauts Football Club initially served as an athletic outlet for club rowers drawn to the sport of rugby football.

With origins steeped in Greek mythology and adorned in the hues of Oxford and Cambridge, the Argonauts quickly emerged as a dominant force in Toronto's sporting landscape. Despite the emergence of strong rival teams, the Argonauts cemented their status as the premier football organization in the city.

The late 19th century witnessed the Argonauts' ascent within the Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU), culminating in their inaugural championship victory in 1883. As the sport continued to evolve, the Argonauts embraced change, transitioning to the Inter-provincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and solidifying their stature on the national stage.

The post-war era marked a golden period for the Argonauts, characterized by unparalleled success and legendary figures. Led by the dynamic pair of Joe "King" Krol and Royal Copeland, the team clinched consecutive Grey Cup victories in the mid-1940s, etching their names in football lore. Under the stewardship of coach Allan "Teddy" Morris, the Argonauts epitomized excellence, embodying the spirit of Canadian football and capturing the imagination of fans across the nation.

How to Reduce Recidivism in Correctional and Rehabilitation Facilities

4/26/2024

Picture
The United States has one of the highest numbers of inmates in the world, with an estimated 531 per 100,000 people, totaling an estimated 1.2 million individuals in prison. Despite spending billions in rehabilitation through the correctional system, 2 of 3 people who are released from prison are rearrested. Some of the ways to reduce recidivism, a relapse into criminal behavior, include motivating inmates, risks and needs assessments, education, and substance treatment.

One of the ways to reduce recidivism is to improve the incarcerated individual’s positive motivation. This reduces recidivism by building trust between the incarcerated individual, the judge, attorneys, therapists, and other stakeholders that can change the incarcerated individual’s behavior. Building confidence through personal interactions may encourage the inmates to change their behavior, as they deem the people they consider enemies to want the best for them. The interactions also focus on reducing the incarcerated individual’s despair and hopelessness in the sentencing process.

One can also reduce recidivism through early assessment of the individual's risks and needs. The risks are the chances of reoffending and include prior criminal activity, poor mental health, substance dependency, and membership in anti-social, illegal or violent peer groups or organizations. The risk level of each variable enables the judge and prison staff to customize the rehabilitation program to reduce recidivism.

In addition, lack of education significantly contributes to petty and more serious crimes. This does not, however, necessarily mean that the educated do not commit crimes. Integrating education in incarceration can help reduce chances of recidivism and ranges from basic literacy and math skills to high school diplomas and trade and technical skills. However, for efficacy and success, the shareholders in incarceration, through the internal education programs, should assess the inmate to determine the education requirements.

Last, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, 44 percent of inmates are drug offenders. A significant percentage of other crimes occur under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Coupled with education programs, substance treatment and rehabilitation programs help reduce recidivism. The substance treatment can take the form of either a deferred sentence to allow for external treatment or an intensive in-prison treatment.

The Role of a Guardian Ad Litem

4/12/2023

Picture
A graduate of Kent State University, Judge Amy Corrigall Jones serves as a judge in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas, and has made significant contributions to the legal system in Ohio. Judge Amy Corrigall Jones began her legal career in a private legal practice, where she represented clients in civil litigation, criminal defense, and family law. She also served as a guardian ad litem for children.

Court-appointed, a guardian ad litem (GAL) is an individual who works during a child custody case to represent a child's interests in court. In Ohio, GALs are typically attorneys who must pass a special examination set by the Ohio CASA/GAL Service Association and the Ohio Supreme Court (OSCCA). GALs perform investigative duties, including visiting families, interviewing parents and relatives, and speaking with children who are old enough to communicate. They also review children's medical and school reports, and sometimes interview teachers, among other relevant duties. The court outlines the GAL's tasks upon appointment.

The role of a GAL is to help the court gather as much information as required to reach an adjudication that factors in the best interests of the child involved in a custody case. GALs must attend all hearings throughout the litigation process and make regular home visits to inspect the child's living situation. They must present the information they gather from their investigation to the court and apply the law to the relevant facts to make a custody recommendation. A GAL's recommendation, which must be unbiased, will have a significant impact on the court's ruling.
